Gainesville, Fla. - Contestants in "The Intern" raised more than 1,700 for the children at Shands Children's Hospital at a yard sale at Santa Fe Community College last weekend.
"We've made a lot of money for a really good cause," said Project Coordinator Ray-Scott Miller.

For the second task in a seven-week competition to be Mayor Pegeen Hanrahan's intern, teams had five days to find items and services to sell for the most profit.
"I've seen a lot of ingenuity from the teams in getting donations for this task," Miller said. "Both teams took a different approach in what products they chose to sell."
The competition was close. Honor Incorporated sold a used Dodge mini-van for three hundred dollars, helping the team stay ahead of Team LEAD by less than twenty dollars.

"I think the teams did a really good job getting the message out and letting people know (about the yard sale)," said Hanrahan. "The contestants have been really creative, some of them even brought their Moms to help," she said. "It's hard to cut someone after you meet their Mom."

Elizabeth Rumph was the second contestant to be eliminated by Mayor Hanrahan this week. She will receive a six-credit scholarship to Santa Fe Community College for participating.
For this week's task, teams will compete in a three-part competition with the children at Shands, including devising an entertainment activity. They will also buy bedside gifts for the children with a portion of the money that they raised.

"I'm really excited that they are going to bring some fun and excitement to the children at Shands Children's Hospital," Hanrahan said.
